An example of this is the new retina displays on the MacBook pros. Apple (and others, I'm sure) are starting to remove the outermost glass on the LCD panel assembly because of higher LCD / case integration. The gloss finish will usually have a more contrasty look, which is nice when conditions are right. You might like a matte finish on a laptop that you use in lots of different lighting. I tend to like matte because it doesn't glare from external lighting as much, but that is only a problem if you have a lighting problem. The gloss vs matte finish is a preference thing. The monitor and video card both play a big role (my work laptop has shadows on the signal for any monitor, for example) I have seen very nice VGA signals at high resolution and very bad ones. A VGA cable has three very high bandwidth analog signal in there, and is prone to degradation. OLED panels reportedly will be even nicer and will arrive someday.ĭVI (or HDMI) cables are a digital signal, so the information gets to the monitor with no degradation. Kind of like all mills can interpolate a circle, but the better ones do it better. Apple tends to use display technologies from the higher end of the spectrum - they have traditionally considered the display part of the quality of experience and have erred on the higher end because of this.
